How do I delete hard disk drive safely before disposing of or selling it?

I'm planning to get rid of an old hard disk and want to make sure none of my personal files can be recovered. What's the best way to delete hard disk drive completely? Is formatting enough, or should I use a secure erase tool or physically destroy the drive?

Before disposing of or selling a hard disk drive, back up any important data, then use a trusted disk-wiping tool to securely erase all files by overwriting the drive.
