How can I use mac file shred terminal to securely delete files?
I'm looking for a way to securely erase files using mac file shred terminal commands instead of a third-party app. Is there a built-in Terminal method on macOS that permanently deletes files so they can't be recovered, and are there any precautions I should take before using it?

On older versions of macOS, you could use the srm command in Terminal to securely overwrite and delete files. However, Apple removed srm from recent macOS releases because it is ineffective on SSDs and APFS storage. Today, the best approach is to use FileVault encryption, empty the Trash normally, or securely erase an entire external drive using Disk Utility when appropriate.

Modern macOS handles secure deletion differently than older versions. Since srm was removed, enable FileVault, empty Trash, or securely erase supported external drives using Disk Utility safely.

Recent macOS versions no longer support secure file shredding through Terminal. Instead, enable FileVault, delete files normally, or securely erase compatible external drives using Disk Utility.

Older macOS versions supported the srm command for secure deletion. Modern macOS recommends FileVault encryption, regular Trash removal, or Disk Utility to securely erase compatible external drives.
